I don’t know about you, but when I go away I usually take a sex toy or two with me in my suitcase. And sometimes, even though I’m TSA pre-check, those sex toys cause my suitcase to be searched at security.

It happened last week when my husband and I were about to take off for DC. Or at least I thought it happened. My bag got put aside and I could see the outline of one of my sex toys on the x-ray screen at security. I told my husband I thought that was the reason my bag got put aside and he said: “Just say it’s a massager.”

I decided that I was not going to say it was a massager if I were asked. I was going to tell the truth. Twenty years ago I just flat out said it was a vibrator, which I had in my purse one time. This time I thought: Why am I not going to just tell the truth? If I lie, it just perpetuates the taboo about sex. I think we need to start breaking down all the myths and taboos about sex. The more we talk about it as if it were not a big deal, the less of a big deal it becomes. I mean, I can’t possibly be the only person who brings sex toys on vacation, right?!

Turned out, they must have been checking my bag for some other reason because the security guy barely looked in my bag and then gave it back to me. I was almost disappointed.
