Do You Know How To Pronounce This Word?

Back to my taking the Human Sexuality course in college….my friend and I kept chuckling to ourselves about how the professor didn’t know how to pronounce the word “clitoris”.  (He was pronouncing it like this:  “kli tr uhs”, with the emphasis on the first syllable.)  Then, one day I thought to myself- well, maybe he really does know what he’s talking about, I mean, he IS a professor of Human Sexuality!  So I looked it up and- guess what?  He was right!  

I was reminded of this story because this week I was listening to a podcast that had 3 hosts.  The podcast was about polyamory and coaching and therapists host it.  And not a single one of them knew how to pronounce clitoris.  

This happens to be one of my pet peeves in general (yes, I’m showing my cranky side, lol), but for 3 professionals not to be in the know, on a public forum?  What do you think that says about our society’s education when it comes to human sexuality? 

I’d say it means we have neglected it.  And, I’m also guessing that if it were part of a man’s genitalia, the whole world would know how to pronounce it correctly!  I’m not saying this as one of those feminine man-haters.  Anyone who knows me personally knows I LOVE men.  And, we live in a sexist world.  

But I digress.  Isn’t it sad that most people don’t even know how to pronounce an important part of a woman’s body, of her sexuality?  

While we’re all still at least somewhat cooped up during COVID-19, perhaps this can be a time for more education about our own sexuality as human beings.  After all, part of loving ourselves is knowing ourselves!  

Oh and P.S. Guess who was the only student to date to have gotten a 100 on the Human Sexuality final?  Go figure!

One more thought for you tonight:  I’m thinking of starting a therapy group for singles and couples, most likely a poly/kinky/non-mono friendly group for people to be able to air their concerns, get feedback from me and their peers, and process what’s coming up for them regarding sex and relationships.  I’m curious to get a read on how much interest there is for this.  Please let me know if you may be interested in something like this.  It will be very affordable.  Thanks!
